Sparsile: The sentencing of Dharun Ravi ›

futuresailorjayhickey:

This is a fucking joke. On the charges of bias intimidation and invasion of privacy, he faces a 30 day in jail sentence with 3 year probation and a $11,000 fine.

This is not justice. I love how this fucking judge sits there and exclaims that what he did was basically a hate crime and a…

The Daily Life of The Closeted Man: 30 Days in Prison: A Letter to Dharun Ravi ›

theclosetedman:

Dharun Ravi,

So, it all came down to a slap on the wrist. Lucky for you, I guess. You got exactly what you wanted. For the last few months, you really tried (and apparently succeeded) at playing the victim in this case, when you are undeniably in the wrong. The problem is that you do not realize…

First, it was never (legally) about Tyler Clementi’s suicide. Under American law, people are not responsible for every subsequent consequence of their actions. So, for the purposes of understanding Ravi’s sentence, imagine that the suicide didn’t happen. Ravi secretly videotaped Clementi having sex with another man, embarrassed him, and, yes, in some (but not most) of his comments, made a couple of snide references to homosexuality. For that, he received 30 days in jail, three years’ probation, 300 hours of community service, and a $10,000 fine.

Jay Michaelson argues that the 30-Day sentence for Dharun Ravi in Rutgers Spying case is just right.  (via cheatsheet)

but herees the thing, the damn suicide did happen! Being straight Indian female myself, I am repulsed at the extent that people will go to protect their own kind. If this was the other way around, and Dharun had been the gay one, this would have been portrayed as a flat out hate crime. I love my culture, and I understand that college children are stupid. I’m in college myself and I strongly believe that discrimination and bullying are never ok. While I agree LGBT activists may be exaggerating, the fact is the suicide happened. And no one considers this a hate crime because a white homosexual male is the victim! The mother complained about her son eating…eating! Well someone elses son is dead. While it may not be entirely Dharun’s fault, he had no rigth filiming his sex life and publicizing it. By making it a spectacle on twitter he made it a laughing object. He took the intimate moments that this shy, kept to himself student had and publicized them as something unnatural and funny on the internet. While that doesn’t seem like hate to me, it does imply disrespect and vengeance against someone due to the fact that they are having sex with a male. Furthermore, this guy tampered with evidence. It disgusts me that Indians will protect Indians no matter what. Hate crimes arent against minorities, they can be commited by minorities as well! If a girl had jumped to her death, or if tyler clementi had been of ethnic race, his outcome would have been difference. If he had been filmed with a girl and the girl commited suicide, they would have had Dharuns ass deported in a second. I am truly repulsed by the moral, blind state of this country. Being a straight Indian college going female, I believe that Tyler did not get justice BECAUSE he was white. I want people to see that while Indians are subject to discrimination everyday, they can discriminate as well. I want him to suffer the consequences, and I want him to be deported. He has no place in America, enjoying the countries resources and oppurtunities. So many people in India can’t afford to come here, dream of coming here, most of my family included. Its a shame that people like him, who are protected under their race and social status can stay, while people working hard or who can’t get out of their situations dream of America. It’s not that India’s bad, I want to see his oppurtunities taken out from under his feet. I want him to realize the extent of what he did, and how lucky he was that he wasn’t white and that Tyler was gay. This case is entirely about discrimination, not just by Dharun, but by America and the legal system. I say that this WHITE MALE was the victim of unbearable damages psycologically, and whether or not that contributed to his suicide directly, the sentence of 30 days is a slap on the face!

WHAT THE EFFF.

Dharun Ravi caused Tyler Clementi to jump to his death. Guess what? Ravi only gets 30 days in jail, 300 hours community service and a couple years of probation. Is that unjust or is that unjust.

I’m so disgusted with our justice system. Dharun Ravi is the Rutgers University student that used a webcam to spot on Tyler Clementi’s romantic encounter with another man; he then shared said video with Tyler’s classmates, which ultimately led to Tyler taking his own life… Dharun was facing 10…

I just finished a Journal for class on Tyler Clementi’s suicide and the trial. Fucking Depressing! Let people love who they love. Dharun Ravi needs a harsher sentence. Ravi, you took his dignity and you influenced him to take his life. Yet you sit there smirking at your 30 day sentence. YOU ARE A MURDER.

Dharun Ravi and the Debate Over the (In)Justice of Hate Crime Laws
Dharun Ravi, the former Rutgers student who spied on Tyler Clementi and contributed to Tyler’s death, received a sentence of 30 days in jail and 3 years of probation. He is to perform 300 hours of community service, undergo counseling, and pay a $10,000 fine that will go to an organization providing assistance to victims of bias crimes. This sentence is significantly more lenient than the decade in jail Mr. Ravi could have received.
[Mr. Waldman] agree[s] with Nathaniel Frank over at the Huffington Post, who said that Mr. Ravi’s behavior was “inexcusable.” His actions surely contributed to Clementi’s death” and “were malicious, irresponsible, dehumanizing, and criminal.” And yet, like Mr. Frank, [he] was almost “relieved” to hear that Mr. Ravi would not face the maximum sentence. [He] would have been somewhat more satisfied with a few-month sentence rather than a one-month sentence, but that is not the point. In a previous, somewhat controversial prior column on the Tyler tragedy, [he] argued what Mr. Frank would argue later: That we have to be careful not to focus our search for justice solely on one individual where greater social forces are to blame and then prematurely congratulate ourselves and wash our hands of the responsibility to address those social problems once Mr. Ravi’s trial is over.

The benchmark of a good human being is also about being able to say sorry. And that is where Dharun Ravi and his family have fallen grievously short. “I heard this jury say, ‘guilty’ 288 times — 24 questions, 12 jurors,” Judge Berman told Ravi. “I haven’t heard you apologize once.”
